Artacho Jurado (brazilian 1907-1983)

Artacho Jurado, much like Tadao Ando, was a self-taught architect. His most known works span the years 1947-1959, and for the most part are located in São Paulo, Brazil. These works contained a unique style, a perfect mixture between modern and nouveau, classic and deco; a true reflection of his Hollywood dreams. Jurado would often mix and match different colored materials in the same project, such as tiles, latticed facades, intricately designed gates, balcony railings, and banisters that were all created by the architect himself. His buildings went above and beyond the concept of “living” as they were often designed with a number of services and leisure options for its inhabitants. At the time, Jurado was heavily critiqued by other architects, but throughout the years he has gained a legion of admirers who study his works and have regular meetings to discuss them.
